her side

We went to dinner at Bavette's on Friday, March 6th, to celebrate our three-year dating anniversary.  In lieu of presents, we decided to write each other poems and read them aloud after dinner. Our poems were a representation of our personalities; mine was humorous, childish and scattered; Derek's was thoughtful, mature and professionally written. I had previously told Derek, in a playful manner, never to propose to me on a Friday night, since I'm typically burnt out after the work week, so I wasn't expecting a thing.  The next morning when I got out of the shower, I noticed a large glass vase overflowing with a vibrant arrangement of my favorite flowers. Next to it was the first piece of rhyming poem that was scattered down our hallway, leading into the kitchen. I thought to myself that the poem theme was a bit redundant, since we concluded our anniversary the previous night, but was eager to see what the poem trail led to. I was secretly hoping that Derek dressed our cat up in a silly outfit. When I stepped into the kitchen, with my hair soaking wet, I saw Derek wearing a blazer with a gleam in his eye.  At that exact moment, I don't remember what he said, but I know that I said, "Yes!" in a high-pitched shaking voice. That was the start of the best day of my life!

Story

his side

For the day of the proposal, I knew I wanted to incorporate Renee's family so we could all celebrate together. I asked Mark for his permission on probably the coldest day of 2015. Thankfully, after several freezing blocks walking around the West Loop, he gave me his permission to ask Renee to marry me. So with the help of Allison and Patrick, I coordinated a secret return Chicago trip for Adrienne and Mark. After Renee said yes that Saturday morning, March 7 in our apartment, we went down to Allison and Patrick's to share the big news (of course they already knew), where the four of them and the twins were waiting for us with champagne on ice. Renee had no idea her parents were back in town, which made it extra special. After many celebratory toasts, phone calls and texts, the six of us had dinner at Piccolo Sogno, where Renee and I had our first date three years prior.
